SONIC GEOGRAPHIES: Inner Landscapes in Spatial Sound

Join us for an evening of immersive listening and conversation. This sonic salon is part listening lab, part conversation and part concert, where perception itself becomes the artform. We will explore how space shapes sound, and how sound shapes consciousness.

With Josh Peck, featuring artists Matthew Patterson Curry and David Rothenberg.

Using a spatial audio system, we’ll explore different audio formats (mono, stereo, ambisonic) and listen to three original spatial compositions. The experience invites curiosity, attunement, and deeper awareness of sound’s multidimensional nature and its effect on consciousness.

7:00–7:30 PM – Listening in Dimensions

Welcome and demonstration of audio formats: Mono → Stereo → Ambisonic and discussion of psychoacoustics, perception and attention.

7:30–9:00 PM – Composed Space / Inner Movement

Three original spatial compositions by Josh Peck, Matthew Patterson Curry and David Rothenberg

9:00–9:30 PM – Closing Panel

Josh, Matthew & David elaborate upon immersive sound experiences, consciousness, and future applications in wellness and immersive art and Q&A.

About the presenters:

Josh Peck is co-founder of The Overtone App and The Dojo Upstate and is a sound meditation facilitator, experiential designer and immersive audio-content creator. With a background in sound engineering and focus on the therapeutic and transformative potential of sound, Josh specializes in creating 3D sound experiences for meditations, Apps, museums, festivals, installations and wellness retreats. His work emphasizes the use of harmonic overtone-rich instruments and natural acoustics as the primary tapestry for self-inquiry, while leveraging immersive audio technology to accentuate the acoustic experience, and expand dimensional awareness.

Matthew Patterson Curry Matthew Patterson Curry is a Brooklyn based sound designer and producer who makes eccentric and experimental electronic music. His musical adventures under the name Safety Scissors explored whimsical techno-pop while latter compositions for film and immersive experiences challenge listeners in new ways. Embracing Deep Listening techniques that magnify and transcend sounds that normally go unnoticed, he has worked with various multichannel audio formats to present his mix of field recording and synthesis.

David Rothenberg is a composer, clarinetist, author, and philosopher whose work explores the deep relationship between music, humanity, and the natural world. The author of Why Birds Sing, Thousand Mile Song, Bug Music, and Nightingales in Berlin—each paired with acclaimed recordings and films—Rothenberg has made music live with birds, whales, and insects, revealing the sonic intelligence of the living planet. His projects have inspired BBC and French television documentaries, a National Geographic feature, and translations into multiple languages.

A Grammy Award–winning artist (for For the Birds, 2024), Rothenberg has released more than forty albums, including One Dark Night I Left My Silent House on ECM with Marilyn Crispell and Cicada Dream Band with Pauline Oliveros. His most recent work, Secret Sounds of Ponds, uncovers the hidden music beneath our local waters. Rothenberg is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Music at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and host of the Soundwalker podcast.
